My brother was born in 1978 when Downs children were still looked at as abominations. My mother fought to see him, and the nurse who brought “Josh” to her was fired. I always thought about teaching creative writing, but figured it was sort of a pipe dream. But then my husband went back to school to get his teaching certification, and every day he brought home interesting stories that made me realize I was even more interested in education than I thought. And I’ve been happy to find that discussing stories, ideas, creativity and writing with young people has been as inspiring as I’d hoped.
