Here’s what I’ve been up to lately.
• Motherhood. Our daughter was born in August 2011, and being her mom is the biggest and best thing that’s ever happened to me. She also happens to have Down syndrome, which I knew nothing about before she was born, and which is turning out to be really kind of…cool. Seriously — I think our daughter is incredible, and she’s taking us on a journey that’s even more exciting and meaningful and fun than I ever expected!
• Loving being married. It’s been over four years now. Do we still count as newlyweds? I still feel like one.
• Continuing to learn about life and death. Our firstborn child, our son August, died unexpectedly at birth in January 2010 after 41 and a half weeks of pregnancy. Working through this loss has been the hardest and most defining experience of my life. I’m slowly learning that these are the experiences we would never choose, but which make us feel even closer to and more loving toward our friends and families. As my brilliant superwoman midwife Michele said, we are walking through this together…
• Still writing. Maybe not as much as I used to, in terms of hours per day (ha — per day?! per week is a more appropriate measurement!), but I am very excited to be writing Web site content for my former employer once again, and have also been writing articles for publication about my experiences with motherhood. I am also extremely proud to be one of the cast members of the 2012 Listen to Your Mother show here in Austin. We will read our essays aloud on April 29 at the UT Executive Conference Center.
Hey CAM, how you been? We haven’t seen you in a month. Am I the only one that noticed
I got to thinking, you need to post videos and/or music tracks here or a site like Youtube. Sure wish you had an email link
But then, I understand with todays ‘crazies’ why you can’t
Anyway, hope all is well. Update us as soon as you can.
Cheers
Fred
Hi Fred!! Thanks so much for visiting — it’s so nice to know people are still checking in on me though I’ve been under a rock. I’ll be coming out soon, though. I should be finished with draft 1 of my latest young-adult manuscript by Tuesday! Wahoo!!
Thanks again for visiting in and checking in.
Love the new look!
Hey, thanks, Romantic Girl!
I have to know. Are you the same Catherine Morris from Dazed and Confused? Please tell me you are.
Hi Joe,
Ummm…yes!
I knew that
I didn’t want to say anything because I wasn’t sure how you feel about it. I must say, I too am a D&C fan. Mainly because my high school times were real close to the movie. I swear ever the jocks like the same
Fred
Hey there! No… gonna start off saying I’m not one of those crazies. Just watched D&C for like the 200th time! I just started looking into seeing what else you’ve done. And forgive me for saying, cause I know you’re married, and I too have a wonderful woman in my life…. but you were cute as hell in that movie! Anywho, nice to meet you…. and best of luck with your teaching career!
WOW, replying to these posts late, but — Fred and Tommy, thanks for your sweet comments! It’s so nice that people still like that movie and everything! I had such a small role in it that it’s also really nice to be noticed — hee. Thanks again.
Wow! I haven’t visited in a while, and all kinds of things are going on! Congratulations on everything, but mostly the baby-to-be!
Sounds like you are keeping busy and having fun!
Thank you, Alyssa — so nice to hear from you on here!! (I say, months & months later…heh…)
Hi Catherine, Just checking out your site a bit. I am a sucker for writers workshops and would be curious to attend one of yours except…I am not located in Texas.
I am an aspiring writer but mostly in science fiction, how do you feel about that genre?
(Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlen or however the hell you spell it?)
Hi Stevie, Thanks for visiting my site! I do offer my workshop online sometimes, so I hope you’ll keep checking back for dates and availability. I just finished teaching it mid-March, so I’ll probably offer it again this summer sometime.
And I love sci-fi, though I’m not very widely read in it (yet). I really love Neal Stephenson — The Diamond Age and Snow Crash, especially. I read those books again and again (though on subsequent reads I started skipping big portions of the text…seems like Stephenson likes to write these looooong, verbose chapters that are more about his personal interests than advancing the story…
). I haven’t read any Asimov yet but he’s on my list. I heard once that he had several typewriters at different desks in his house, which he would use to keep two or three or more stories going at once. I think that’s really cool. I usually work on a couple of stories at once, when I’m writing, and I always have 8 or 10 books around the house to read concurrently.
Well, I got off on a tangent! Thanks again for visiting, and for your interest!
Hi Catherine. I hope you don’t get tired of it but I loved you in Dazed & Confused. You had a small role but geez you were hot (in a 70′s sort of way).
I grew up back then and that move captured so much of what it was really like. Anyway, it’s cool to find you and get to say Hi.
Hey Cat, how ru? I was reading cnn.com and saw the where are they now D & C. I was reading your bio on there and saw that you live in Austin. I live in austin also and I’m a writer also. I’m currently driving a taxi cab in Austin. Do you take taxis? Because you look familar(besides the movie). I drive a Prius taxi cab. Anyways I’d love for you to read some of my work.
I read your post regarding Mr. Larry D Preas (dated 2007). Like so many others I fortunate to have met him and will not forget the good he has done.
How did you end up in teaching, of all things? Something you wanted to do or happened to come across it later on?
Hi, Tony. Sorry for the long delay in posting your comment! I haven’t been keeping up with this site as well as I should. I always thought about teaching creative writing, but figured it was sort of a pipe dream. But then my husband went back to school to get his teaching certification, and every day he brought home interesting stories that made me realize I was even more interested in education than I thought. And I’ve been happy to find that discussing stories, ideas, creativity and writing with young people has been as inspiring as I’d hoped.
I want to applaud you for saying that your journey with a down syndrome child is cool. My brother was born in 1978 when Downs children were still looked at as abominations. My mother fought to see him, and the nurse who brought “Josh” to her was fired. They used to take downs babies to the mental facilities. I hope your journey is as eventful and rewarding as mine has been. Hope you have an awesome journey
Thank you, Sean. We are really proud of our daughter and think she’s definitely the coolest person we know. (And the smartest, funniest, and hardest-working.) I’m so glad your relationship with your brother has been rewarding for you. Thanks again for the well-wishes!
